Guarding and proclaiming the unchanging truth in a changing world

Rev Richard Bewes, former Gafcon Trustee, dies age 84

Rev Richard Bewes OBE, the former rector of All Souls church Langham Place in London, has died aged 84.

Rev Bewes was an influential Christian leader in the UK throughout his life. He was the rector of All Souls from 1983 until his retirement in 2004. Rev Bewes served on the board of Trustees for Gafcon from 2011 to 2016, he also served on the Church of England Evangelical Council in the 1990s and was on the British Board of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association for much of his life.

We thank God for Rev Bewes' faithful Gospel ministry and for his service to Gafcon.

Bishop Michael Nazir Ali (former Bishop of Rochester and Gafcon Guarantor):

“Richard was always concerned for the unity in biblical truth of the worldwide Anglican Communion. He showed this with his presence and active involvement in efforts to encourage Anglicans to remain faithful to the Bible and the Church’s teaching down the ages”.

Archbishop Peter Jensen (former Archbishop of Sydney and former Gafcon General Secretary):

“Whenever I think of Richard, I am reminded of Nathaniel, “one in whom there is no guile”. He served the Lord with all his heart, was gentle, full of cheer, but never frightened by opposition. I am personally so grateful for his support in the ministry of Gafcon."

He is survived by his wife Pam Bewes, whom he married in 2012, both of them having known earlier bereavements.
