Guarding and proclaiming the unchanging truth in a changing world

Devotion

Most people like a good love story. This month (November), for the Lift Up Your Hearts devotions, Bishop Samuel (Sammy) Morrison from the Diocese of Valparaiso in Chile, brings us a series on The Book of Ruth--a great love story. To extract all the riches of the great love story found here, we will first read a few passages from Joshua and Judges which will provide us a foundation to understand Ruth. Finally, we will read texts from Isaiah and the New Testament to apply this great love story to us thanks to Jesus Christ, the Great Redeemer.

All these devotions were shared first in Spanish by members of Iglesia Anglicana San Pedro de Viña del Mar, where Sammy is now the senior minister. Sammy has been a pastor for more than thirty years, serving different Anglican congregations in Chile. Among them, he had the joy of being the pastor of Iglesia St. James in Punta Arenas, the southernmost Anglican Church in the world.

One of the few Anglicans in Chile who can claim grandparents and great grandparents who were believing Anglicans, he abandoned the faith at the age of twelve, declaring himself an agnostic. While in university and studying dentistry, he came back to Christ and has been a committed Christian since then. After three years of dental practice, he read theology in the States (Trinity School for Ministry) and was ordained in 1990.

Sammy has written study guides for small groups and daily reading devotions for Spanish-speaking Anglicans. Lately, he has begun translating good quality books written by Reformed Anglicans, so Chilean Anglicans can grow in their Christian identity, enriching themselves with an Anglican perspective. *If you or someone you know is a Spanish speaker you can watch and listen to Sammy shares these devotions here.

Married to Viviana Torres, they have four adult children, a granddaughter and are preparing themselves to receive a grandson early next year.
